Flew into SeaTac from Boston at 9:30pm on Friday night, got in the Burb and headed straight to Skykomish to meet the wife and kids. 11pm = 2am east coast time, and that was the time I was on when I got to that cold ass cabin.
Up early the next morn and off to the pass. Snowing all day, blizzard style. Shit was cold and fun. Sunday...lessons day for me and the boys. First off, Milo has been putting off a book report due this Friday, so the long arm of the MOM was thrown down and ole Milo had to spend the day in the cabin, doing homework, while Mac and I were at the pass riding 15" of new, cold, light ass, cherry cherry pow pow under blue bird skys. DUDE, do your fucking homework ok?

This is Hogs chairlift at 8:45am on a 15" pow day with the parking lots full. Odd. Specially when they open at 9. Shit was running, no one on em and We-Gnar and I lapped the shit out of it.

Lesson number 2 of the day. If it doesn't look good, bail. Over zealous soccer Dad decides to bring two 8 year olds into Shims, and the consequences were large. All ice runs getting in, one slip and the kids were pin balling thru the trees. Common sense grabbed hold of me, and we turned and hiked our asses out of there with our tails between our legs.

Enough snow fell in Skykomish so Washingtons newest shred area opened up for night operations. Skull Mountain is running. Mi got enough of the book report done that long arm of the law Moms let his ass one foot the stump.

K, whirlwind tour this week. Left Sky on Sunday, on a plane Monday morning, landing in Newark NJ Monday night. Rolled into Enterprise to rent my midsize CAR, dude takes me up and says no midsizes, "what you want? Pick anything." K, give me that black Suburban. Done. Newark to Atlantic Shitty, thru New York City, to Hartford CT, to S. Dartmouth MA, to the City of Champions Brockton, to Boston and now home. 650 miles. Now I land at SeaTac at 9, in my Silver Bullet Burban back up to Skykomish for the snow that is about to pound on us, then to Baker on Monday to qualify the We-Gnar for the Banked Slalom, to Orange County on Tuesday (9-5 Lisa, I'll be home before I'd normally be home), in the orfice on Wed, Outdoor Retarder on Thursday and Friday. Back to the cabin for the weekend, then off to Denver for SIA for the next ELEVEN days. Fuck...January is a wash. Anyway, got a message from Nate that said "Lack of blog updating = lack of snowboarding. You comin up this weekend?"

15 out of the last 18 days on the snow, as we nestled up in Skykomish for the holidays, while I occasionally worked from the mountain office. Without a doubt, Stevens Pass has the best snow in the USA these days. Shit was firing while we were on break. Yea, a rain day or two, but that shit would turn to blue sky later in the day and the snow would be soft and fun. And then...and then the snow came. And came, and came. Shit, they'd report 3", we'd ride a dozen. They'd say there'd be a dozen of new, there was a foot and a half. Back to back to back pow days. And while MSN and USA Today are reporting how ski area's are hurting, Stevens broke there all time attendance record. The Terror Squad was on point too over the break. New shit was learned and no one got hurt. Enjoy, and Happy New Year.

That time of year again

Euro Sales Meeting time...the last 4 years we've done our winter meeting abroad, and following tradition, Zell em See Austria where this years C3 winter sales meeting is taking place. It's a small ski willage (euro for village) in Austria that has glacier skiing as well as the regular stuff. Looks like we'll be getting our glacier on over here though, seeing how it's like fucking August over here with the weather. Europe, clearly hasn't heard the news that it's another La Nina year, like we have in the Northwest.
Gums, Kris and I came over half a week before everyone else for a little R and D. We flew into Geneva and drove to Friburg Switzerland to meet up with Jak and Eddy from hOme watches. The brothers welcomed us with a hOme cooked meal in the house that they grew up in downtown. To say the insides of this place were a interior designers wet dream, would be an understatement. All the wood work, doors, cabinets and what not were pretty next level, and passed down from a few generations. The next day we got treated to watch world 101 and to tell you the truth, I was kinda blown away with the whole day as we went from clinic to watch factory. That's Swiss Watch Factory. Recognize! Anyway...

Maiden voyage

Finally, after sending 2 sets of bindings and a check to the Karakorum dudes (thanks Tyler) like in late September, and having my Party Shark and Microscope sent out to be split, Nick at Sick Splits finished the shit up on Wednesday. The day we were leaving for the cabin for a good 5 days of hick time. All we needed were some skins and poles and off we'd be going. So I thought.

So after Thanksgiving dinner with the Burchs, Josh jumped in as the experienced hippie and started getting our skins dialed to the boards. "What the fuck is a tail clip dude?" Yea he had spares. 2 hours later we had our shit looking tight, all we had to do was commit to walking vs. riding the chair.

Friday at Stevens was a mad house. Pow, good weather and people with days off equaled 4,500 people on the hill, that is half open. Lines galore. So, no better time than the present right?
Josh continued with his patient (kindbro'd) ass with Milo and I and took us for our first tour. It would of taken us a good half a dozen times or so just to figure out what he told us to do in the first 30 minutes. Lesson here, go with people who have done it before you.

A 45 minute climb to up the mountain across the street from the area was pretty easy. Lil guy was freaking me out too. "Dad, look at this view! Dad, this is awesome. Dad, can we do this again after we get to the bottom?" Hmmmm, hippie spawn?

We were still climbing to the top when we passed this touring skier who was coming down the hill in the same tracks he went up (why the fuck would you do that) when we asked him how much farther it was to the top. He said it was ten minutes up but if he were us, he'd just strap in and ride down from where we were because it was skin trail to come down on to get to the pow field we just passed. Milo said "uh, no way I'm climbing this far with out going to the top, let's go." So, off we continued.

We bolted all our shit together and moto'd the trail up, down slashing everything in site until we got the big ass slope that was track free. Then we proceeded to tattoo the shit out of it with our signature style down. Hands down, best pow runs of the season.

So for the maiden voyage, double thumbs up. Fairly easy to do, stuff rides like the resort goods we ride, and the untracked der is worth the hike. Thanks Burch for the patience in popping our cherrys. You were gentle. Fuck yea bro, gorps pretty tasty.

MT. BAKER SKI AREA WILL OPEN FRIDAY NOV. 18th!
Forecasts are calling for a strong front to bring us 15 - 20 inches of new snow over tonight and tomorrow. This snow, added to our existing base, will give us the amount needed to begin the 2011-12 season. Depending on how conditions develop, we are looking to open both Base Areas and most chairlifts, but be sure to check our snow report Thursday afternoon for final opening day details.
It is currently 29-degrees at the mountain and overcast. We've had no new snow, and our base at Heather Meadows is 29 inches.

There's a reason I've enjoyed individual sports all my life and it's because you got no one to blame but yourself when you get your ass kicked. But there are lessons to be learned on teams, and that's why we have the rodents playing so many. They are destined to be individual sport kids, but forced to play team.
So it's CYO soccer team final game this last Saturday. The boys worked their asses off all season, 2 practices a week, plus a game, and most of them played club soccer too so their game was stepped up. In Milo's case, he practiced 4 days a week, and played 2 games a week. Dedicating 12 + hours a week to this craft. All this work, for what was to go down on Saturday, the CYO finals. They were destined to be crowned the Best God Soccer team.
That is, till one person decided to bring Satan upon them. One of the 4 key players parents decided it was time to teach their kid a lesson on Saturday. They weren't gonna let them play in the finals because he didn't do a book report. Hmmmm. So...practice all year, play all year in hopes to make it to the finals, then teach your kid a lesson by not playing him? Not only did your decision keep your kid off the field, but now you just made a decision for the two coaches, 16 other kids on the field and the parents that went to every practice and game.
So now, team loses to a team they should of beat, because one key kid wasn't there. Hmmmm. How about a fucking belt to the kids ass as a lesson Dad? Dude just took my title as Worlds Worst Dad. Now I'm SWWD.
I'm still bullshit about this, 3 days after the fact. Fuck team sports. Over it. For now.

Wieners soccer season ended on Saturday with their first loss. They played a team that plays year round and the other coach came in claiming hard saying they hadn't had a loss in 3 years. First half, our guys were up 3 to 1. Other coach was going nuts, a-because they were losing, b-because I was heckling the fuck out of that fuck. But in the end, they had too much depth on their team and beat us 6-4. Best game I've ever watched and the Wiener learned an important lesson that day. No matter how good you think you are, there's always someone smarter, stronger, faster and tougher than you. Stay humble. Coach Matt giving out the awards to the kids, before the parents got into 4 bottles of bourbon.

Milo's CYO team is seated number 3 in the playoffs. They stand a real good chance of winning the whole thing.

Keys To Reality

It’s kind of funny how you can go from walking around with nothing but lint in you pocket and being totally stoked, to walking around with a pocket full of keys and being totally bummed.
It starts out simply and seductively. I’ll just get this car so I can snowboard more. Wrong. Anything that let’s you snowboard more is a scam. It won’t let you snowboard more because you ride every day and a car can’t add days to the week.
“I’ll just get this little night job so I can buy gas,” you hear yourself saying. There’s another key. Then your job starts making you miss sleep, so you can’t snowboard as hard or as long as you used to. And you need stuff to wear to work. You need a place to change and store your stuff. Now you have an address, that’s another key. Soon you have to get a day job because you’re not making enough money at night. The keys start adding up.
Now that you have a job, girls know you’re not a total loss and you end up with a girlfriend. She wants you to hang with her once in a while instead of going boarding all the time. First, she gives you the key to her heart, and then the key to her apartment. That’s two more. You can’t give her the key to your heart because snowboarding put a combination lock on it and only your snowboard knows the number.
Now you have a bunch of keys in your pocket. They’re high-maintenance items. You have to take care of them. They’re weighing you down. Snowboarding is slowly slipping away, and you don’t even notice.
One day, cruising to your full-time office job that you had to get a few years back to make payments on all your keys, you drive past a guy on the corner with his thumb out and a snowboard under his arm. While speeding by you start thinking about the guy you just passed. He looked like you used to—snowboard and nothing else. As you pull into the parking lot at work, you can’t get the hitchhiker out of your head. Your mind keeps wandering back. Pulling all the keys out of you pocket and jingling them, you think about what you really want from life.
Running back to your car, you reverse out of the parking lot and squeal a Rockford in the middle of the four-lane highway. You’ve got to get away from your keys. You begin throwing them out the window as you blow down the highway. First to go is the key to the door at work. Then you backhand your girlfriend’s apartment key out the passenger window. Flick, there goes the key to the storage unit, then the key to her car. Flick, flick, flick. You feel better each time a key flies out the window and goes bouncing down the pavement at 100 mph. You don’t even slow down for the tollbooth, paying instead with the tossed key to your office and the executive washroom.
You only have two keys left. You unlock your house, run in, grab your snowboard, and dash out of the house. You leave the key to your house sitting in the lock to the front door. Whoever finds the house open can take it, and all your stuff. You don’t need it anymore. You jump back into the car and start burning rubber through all four gears back to the highway where you saw the hitcher.
He’s still there. You slam on the brakes. When he opens the car door, you look into his eyes. It’s you. It’s the life you left behind when you sold out.
